The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.

The Greatness of a Nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind. The future depends on what you do today! All quotes courtesy of Gandhi April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month – hopefully the 3 quotes above will make sense after you read this! For some thoughts on Prevention of Cruelty month, the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) President and CEO, Matthew Bershadker, wrote an article entitled “Why we can’t forget Michael Vick’s dog-fighting Past” which can be found on the ASPCA website. I won’t go into a great detail about the article, since it has caused quite some controversy and graphic, angry comments from people on both sides of the argument. I’m not trying to stir up animosity, but I do want to point out a few things the author included, because this is important stuff. And the better we’ll be if we can get more people to think about this topic, identify ways they can have a positive impact and ensure that we don’t forget. First he points out the Vick was signed by the NY Jets on Friday for a $5 million dollar one year contract. As he points out “Vick is free to do as he pleases both on the football field and off. But one thing he can’t do is absolve himself of direct participation in horrific and fatal animal torture and abuse. And whether he takes our home team to the Super Bowl or spends the season riding the pine, we’re not obligated to forgive, and it’s essential we don’t forget.” Now back to the Gandhi quotes above that I started with. . . I am personally conflicted years later and likely will always be, but these 3 quotes in this order help make a little sense of it for me and hopefully gives us all some direction as we ponder PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS! The ASPCA also reports on their website that every 10 seconds a dog is abused or beaten! Ugggh. . . can we bear that? I hope everyone’s answer is NO. So here are some things that each of us can do in our piece of the universe to bring and inspire more kindness and compassion to our animal friends and family members. I encourage you to go to the ASPCA website as they have all kinds of information, including info for parents to help teach about animal kindness and much more. Don’t support puppy mills! Don’t buy a puppy from a pet store – unless of course the dog is a shelter dog there for adoption. The ASPCA has done and continues to do a good deal of work against puppy mills and you can find more info on their website or www.NoPetStorePuppies.com to better understand the situation. Promote Spay/Neuter in your community and with your pets. The numbers are simply staggering as to how many puppies and kittens come into the world over a several year period from one litter.Support your local animal shelter(s). Either by volunteering, donating or remembering that simple things like old towels and blankets that you might throw away could provide some warm, soft bedding for an animal in a hard, cold kennel.Show your virtual support by recognizing PREVENTION OF CRUTELTY TO ANIMALS month on your Facebook page.Participate in the ASPCA GO Orange, Glow Orange campaign. This campaign is designed to show orange as a sign of kindness and compassion. You can participate by wearing orange, putting orange bows on your house, your office door or cube wall showing your support – and some other great ideas that I’m sure you can come up with!TAKE THE PLEDGE. ASPCA has a number of pledges that you can take showing your commitment to do what you can to help prevent cruelty and/or to not support puppy mills.Make sure that your own pets have the best home you can provide them.If you want a pet, always support adoption of shelter animals. SPREAD the word and get your friends and family thinking about this topic and what they can do. And I think the best way to end is simply to let Gandhi do it for me.
